MWF 1997 Achievement Awards

MWF Most Popular Wrestler of the Year

38% of Votes Each

(Other vote getters: Brett Krueger; Buford T. Justice)

Mountain of Love came out of retirement in 1997 and became one of the most popular men in the MWF. The defender of the underdog Adam Bomb fights for what's right in the MWF.

Our first tie of the year (38% of the votes each) features two men with completely different wrestling styles: The Mountain of Love and Adam Bomb! It is possible that The Mountain Love would have run away with the voting in this category, if not for his unexpected turn against the MWF at Wrestlemania. Before that incident, The Mountain received the biggest ovation from the crowd in the MWF and was a champion of the MWF's cause that the fans could be proud of.

Adam Bomb is loved by all fans everywhere. The children at ringside love to see The Champion of the Underdog, with his bright costumes and terrific crowd interaction. With so few superstars still paying attention to the fans, look for Adam Bomb to dominate this category for quite some time!

MWF Most Hated Wrestler of the Year

63% of Votes

Others Receiving Votes : Bobo Bravado; Brother Fiend; Double 7 Chris Simmons)

Rugged Ralph formed the New World Alliance proclaiming "MWF Sucks" along with Bobo Bravado and Fiend.  Their reign of terror was the driving force behind many feuds and battles in the MWF in 1997.

Although most superstars would not be honored to be named the Most Hated Wrestler of the Year, you can bet that the New World Alliance's Rugged Ralph is loving every minute of his win (with 63% of the votes).   Rugged Ralph certainly made an impact this year. It all started in late1996 with a vicious assault on MWF superstars by Rugged Ralph and his newly formed NWA, and continued all the way through 1997. Rugged Ralph first convinced former champion Bobo Bravo to join his side, but scored a true coupe by getting the other former champion, Fiend, to turn his back on the MWF. Whether winning his feud against newcomer Double 7 Chris Simmons or holding the United States Title for an unprecedented 2 times, Rugged Ralph has clearly become a hated force in the MWF that may just be here to stay.

MWF Rookie of the Year

Others Receiving Votes : Big Red; The Great White Hunter

Double-7 Chris Simmons debuted at Middletown Massacre in May and put the MWF on notice that he was going straight to the top.

1997 saw the debut of one of the hottest young superstars to enter the MWF mat wars in some time; Double 7 Chris Simmons, the Rookie of the Year with 75% of the votes. Chris Simmons (or Double 7, as he is more commonly known) made an immediate splash in the MWF, debuting at the 1997 Middletown Massacre against Prince Rocky Iaukea. Before long this excellent ring technician received his first United States Title shot...and won! Although it was short title reign, Double 7 gained a championship faster than any other wrestler in the history of the MWF. Look for this year's Rookie of the Year to be a top contender for next year's Wrestler of the Year!

MWF Most Improved Wrestler of the Year

38% of Votes

Others Receiving Votes : Rugged Ralph {25%}; Mountain of Molten Lust; General Nuisance; Bobo Bravado

Dr. Destruction answered the NWA's challenge by feuding with them all year, formed the Majority Of Superiority, and stepped up his game inside the ring.

This category featured some of the closest and most diverse voting of the SFS Year End Achievement Awards, as many MWF superstars showed vast improvement.  In the end, with 38% of the vote, the Hardcore Icon Dr. Destruction was named most improved. Dr. Destruction has already enjoyed a highly successful MWF career, having held the World Tag Team Championship with his brother Mike Speedo. But in 1997, Dr. D came into his own as a singles competitor.  Dr. Destruction became known as the "Hardcore Icon" this year, and with good reason; Doc was the recipient of some terrible beatings and the deliverer of heretofore unseen destruction. While always a great superstar, Dr. Destruction clearly brought his game up a notch this year!

MWF Tag Team of the Year

100% of Votes

The Coalition maintained their stranglehold on the MWF World tag team titles annihilating every tag-team put in their path.

This category saw the first (and only) unanimous decision on the part of the fans. The 1997 Tag Team of the Year via 100% vote is The Coalition!! General Nuisance and Private Parts have been arguably the most dominant Tag Team Champions in the history of the MWF, and 1997 was no different.  Whether succesfully defending their belts against Mr. Hiamoto and Reverend Ralph Right or taking on the hated NWA at Wrestlemania, the Coalition proved once again beyond a shadow of a doubt who the best team was. Their tremendous tag team coordination and combination of strength moves and mat techniques proved too much for all the tag team competition this year. Look for a bright future from these already dominating superstars.

MWF Feud of the Year

50% of Votes

Others Receiving Votes : Dr. Destruction/Fiend {25%}; Dr. Destruction vs. Rugged Ralph; Adam Bomb vs. Jeremy "the Juicer")

NWA

VS.

MWF

Fiend, Rugged Ralph, and Bobo Bravado put it all on the line as they essentially seceded from the MWF to battle the likes of Brett Krueger, Dr. Destruction, Double-7 and the rest of the MWF to prove that they were the true superstars.

With 50% of the votes, the heated rivalry between the superstars of the MWF and the NWA was voted the Feud of the Year. There can be no denying that the New World Alliance made an impact this year. The NWA attacked various members of the MWF this year, including Double-7, Brett Krueger and Dr. Destruction. The MWF fought back with the help of the Coalition at Wresltemania, but no side could get the upper hand. Look for this feud to continue into 1998, with the very future of the MWF on the line!

MWF Match of the Year

38% of Votes

Others Receiving Votes : Double 7 vs. The Mountain of Molten Lust at KOTR; Dr. Destruction vs. Bobo Bravado at the KOTR; Dr. Destruction vs. Fiend in a Lumberjack/Strap Match; 3-Way Tables and Ladders Match featuring Bobo Bravado, Dr. Destruction and Fiend

Team NWA - Fiend, Rugged Ralph, & Bobo Bravado

VS.

Team MWF - Dr. Destruction & the Coalition- Private Parts & General Nuisance

It was a great year for the MWF, and nowhere is that more apparent then in this category, as many different matches received votes. But the winner of the Match of the Year for 1997 with 38% of the votes was The Coalition and Dr. Destruction vs NWA; Fiend, Bobo Bravado and Rugged Ralph.   It started when Dr. Destruction asked the Coalition of Private Parts and General Nuisance to give him a hand against the NWA. The Coalition agreed to the match, as did the superstars of the NWA. This match was the featured contest at MWF Wrestlemania 1997 and saw a special stipulation: the man suffering the pinfall would be forced to retire! This war had it all; hardcore action, mat wrestling, high flying moves and several near pinfalls by both teams. With a bounty placed on the head of Rugged Ralph by Dr. Destruction and vice versa, it also had enough plot twists to rival the greatest Hollywood feature film.  The end came when Dr. Destruction attacked his own partner Private Parts and ripped off his own t-shirt revealing an NWA t-shirt underneath. Thinking Dr. D was joining them, it was enough to fool Fiend, who suffered the pinfall after Destruction's dropkicked the briefcase containing the bounty into Fiend's face. The MWF had scored their victory to close out the year and one of the NWA- Fiend - was forced to retire. This will be a match long remembered by the fans and superstars alike.

Others Receiving Votes : Rugged Ralph; Fiend

Mountain of Love defeated 3 other competitors at the 1997 King of the Ring to win the event, and followed that impressive victory up with a MWF U.S. title victory over Rugged Ralph at MWF WrestleMania 1997.

Starting the year as the MWF's most popular athlete, The Mountain of Love ended it as one of the most hated members of the NWA. But wherever his allegiances now lie, there can be no denying the impact this man had in the MWF this year. He won the 1997 King of the Ring, defeating Double-7 Chris Simmons, the NWA's Rugged Ralph and the NWA's Bobo Bravado. The same night he nearly defeated Mike Speedo for the MWF Championship of the World, but was cheated by the interference of the NWA. He would get his revenge later by defeating Rugged Ralph and becoming the MWF United Stated Champion. All in all, a fantastic year for a superstar who finally received the attention he deserves. Look for the Mountain of Love to continue to be a force to be reckoned with for many years.
