Mike Speedo Interview 3/7/98

This interview with Mike Speedo was conducted by an MWF newsletter Surfin' For Scoops editor (also an MWF wrestler) the Big Kahuna just prior to the 9-man Elimination Confrontation event that was to be held at Spring Fling 1998 to determine a new MWF World Champion (Speedo had actually forfeited the title at MWF Wrestlemania 1997 due to injury).

TPBKahuna:
Today's guest is none other than former MWF World Champion, Mike Speedo. How are you today, Mike?
SpeedoMWF:
Just fine, Mr. Kahuna; ready to retake MY world belt.

TPBKahuna:
Let's start right there, then, Mike; tell me a bit about the emotions you felt upon winning not only your battle for respect in 1997, but also the World Title from Brother Friend?
SpeedoMWF:
In some ways it was a bittersweet victory. I won the belt in traditional high-flying Mike Speedo fashion, but during the match, I suffered the worst injury in my professional career. It was fantastic that I won, but the injury would overshadow my future performances.

TPBKahuna:
What exactly was the injury you suffered in that match?
SpeedoMWF:
I fractured several ribs after the gorilla-press slam that Brother Friend/Fiend executed. Then he put me in the 'friendly stretch', further aggravating the injury.

TPBKahuna:
You missed a great deal of 1997 due to this and other injuries. The championship committee, you must admit, was extremely lenient in allowing you to remain champion during this time. However, you did return to make two title defenses in one night at King of the Ring. Were you wrestling injured on that card, Mike?
SpeedoMWF:
If I may say, Kahuna, the MWF has a history of being lenient with their world title schedule. I missed only two cards but came back at KOTR to defend the gold not once, but twice. And yes, I was still feeling the effects of the injury; only very recently has my breathing returned to normal from the fractured ribs. This is old news. I want to talk about how excited I am about the coming PPV season.

TPBKahuna:
We'll get to that in just a moment, Mike. The fans are clamoring for insight on many of the events that transpired last year. For example, when did you decide you must relinquish the World Title, and how hard of a decision was that for you?
SpeedoMWF:
It was after my defense against The Mountain of Molten Lust. Earlier in the card, I defended the title against Reverend Right, and I felt like I reinjured the ribs. Against the Mountain, I was actually fearing to try my patented high flying moves, so I decided right then and there that I would forfeit the world title. I reasoned that if I couldn't give the fans what they've come to expect, then I wasn't worthy of being champion until I felt I was 100%.

TPBKahuna:
Are you 100% today, Mike Speedo?
SpeedoMWF:
I feel very confident that I am indeed 100% ready to give back to the MWF pretenders all the frustration that I felt from having to give up the belt. My first target for assassination is that young upstart Double-7 Chris Simmons.

TPBKahuna:
Really? Why target Double 7 Chris Simmons when the New World Alliance is running rough-shod over the MWF? Aren't you concerned about the NWA?
SpeedoMWF:
Well, Mr. Kahuna, on the first card, I will get ALL the NWA in one match, the Elimination Confrontation. It turns out that I won't have to expressly challenge one of those overrated clowns to get in the ring---I'll get all of them at once. As for why I'm targeting Double-7: The very day I won the MWF title, I was supposed to wrestle him in a match for respect. Brother Friend attacked him, leading to my eventual World Title victory. It's no secret that Double-7 feels that he would've beaten me that day, so I'm going to give him the chance to put his money where his mouth is, as he would probably say.

TPBKahuna:
The Elimination Confrontation takes place in just 2 short weeks at the MWF's first PPV of the year, Spring Fling '98!! Not only will you have to face 4 of the NWA's top superstars, but also 4 of the MWF's top superstars! What do you feel your chances of winning that match are, considering the formidable odds?
SpeedoMWF:
It won't be easy, that's for sure. Unlike the survivor series, where the MWF would be a team, this match is anything goes, every man for himself. This will be the supreme test of endurance. WHOEVER walks out of this one with the gold will definitely be worthy of it. As for my chances, I think I have as good a shot as anyone else, though I must admit, I'll probably be a perfect target for both the NWA and the MWF wrestlers.

TPBKahuna:
Many of the MWF superstars don't take you seriously right now, Mike. Your injury plagued 1997 has left you with a bit of a black eye, I'm afraid, and the locker room chatter behind your back...well, let's just say you're not getting much support from your peers. Are you once again out for respect, something you worked so obsessively to get just one year ago?
SpeedoMWF:
It won't matter what anybody thinks at the moment, because I am very confident that in my first match with Double-7, I will prove to the world what Mike Speedo's made of. If you thought what I did to the Reverend was bad, you ain't seen nothing yet. The doubters will quietly disappear after this first card, I believe.

TPBKahuna:
Brett Krueger was the #1 Contender for as long as you were the Champion, and remains so today. If you were to win the Title at the Elimination Confrontation, would you finally face Brett Krueger in the ring?
SpeedoMWF:
First off, I wouldn't consider someone losing to Big Red to be the #1 contender. But be that as it may, I will be only too happy to defend the belt, should I win at Elimination confrontation, against Brett Krueger at Lunatic fringe, just so I can finally shut his yap.

TPBKahuna:
It's word association time, Mike. I'll throw out a name or topic, and you briefly respond with the first thing that comes to your mind. Are you ready?
SpeedoMWF:
Go ahead

TPBKahuna:
The New World Alliance.
SpeedoMWF:
Bunch of overrated bums; they haven't proven anything but they can win matches by blatantly interfering.

TPBKahuna:
Doctor Destruction.
SpeedoMWF:
Of all the wrestlers in the MWF I feel he would be the one to test me the most. I would love the opportunity to face him and show him the Mike Speedo hardcore style.

TPBKahuna:
Double 7 Chris Simmons.
SpeedoMWF:
Rookie with a big mouth, but the right attitude. He'll go far in the MWF if he doesn't make too many enemies.

TPBKahuna:
Brett Krueger.
SpeedoMWF:
Talented, but not up to champion status, like many other self-proclaimed 'franchises'.

TPBKahuna:
Brother Fiend.
SpeedoMWF:
Tough man, tough opponent. Probably the most brutal, sadistic man in the MWF. If I face him again, I will show him that 1997 was no fluke.

TPBKahuna:
Are you in love with Brother Fiend?
SpeedoMWF:
What kind of question is that? I hate Brother Fiend and all he stands for. I should ask you are you in love with Brett Krueger, since you keep asking everyone's opinion of him.

TPBKahuna:
Bobo Bravado.
SpeedoMWF:
Completely turned around. The NWA association has truly unleashed him. I wouldn't be surprised to see him make a title bid this year.

TPBKahuna:
Rugged Ralph.
SpeedoMWF:
Most deserving of a Speedo frog splash. He's the true driving force behind the NWA and would be tough to beat with all his cronies behind him.

TPBKahuna:
All right, Mike Speedo, thank you very much for your time! Any last words to your peers or to your fans?
SpeedoMWF:
The Speedo you briefly saw in 1997 that won the gold will be back with a vengeance in 1998. Beware, MWF and NWA. Mike Speedo's giving back the pain that he took last year and not showing any mercy to his opponents. To my fans, this will be the Speedo you've always dreamed of. Thanks for the interview, Mr. Kahuna; I'll see you on the Wild Side.

TPBKahuna:
Thanks dude!
