Mike Speedo Interview 6/28/97

This interview with Mike Speedo was conducted by an MWF newsletter MWF Magazine editor Dick Denim just after Mike Speedo had captured the MWF World title for the first time at MWF Summer Showdown 1997.

Dick Denim: First of all, Mike Speedo, CONGRATULATIONS on your winning the MWF championship!!

Mike Speedo: Thanks, Mr. Denim, though, winning the MWF championship wasn't what I expected to do that day.

Dick Denim: Please elaborate, if you will, Mr. Speedo.

Mike Speedo: The day of that card I was scheduled to fight Bobo Bravado of the NWA. He disrespected BOTH the MWF AND Mike Speedo by not even showing up. I must say, however, that it was the best thing that could have happened to me.

Dick Denim: It certainly seemed that way to me. The man that accepted your challenge, extreme rookie Double 7, it turned out, did not make it into the ring with you that day.

Mike Speedo: You see, Dick, I don't even get respect from my fellow wrestlers. The rookie Double 7 thought he could blaze into the MWF and polish off Mike Speedo in no time flat. That's not exactly what happened. Even if Brother Friend hadn't pearl harbored the man, Mike Speedo would have shown the rookie what it means to wrestle in the MWF. Now onto Brother Friend; he thought he had an easy night ahead of him as well. He underestimated Mike Speedo, and paid the price. I really don't know what he was thinking. I mean, he had a scheduled 4-way title match, but i guess he thought he needed to get warmed up by getting a quick win over Mike Speedo. Even though I was hurt early in the match, I knew that this could well be the only title match I might receive for quite some time. And so, I gave EVERYTHING I had and reached down inside myself to shake off the punishment that Brother Friend dished out, ignoring the pain and torture, and inwardly vowed that I would SOMEHOW win this match. He threw just about everything in his arsenal at me, and I just stood there and took it. Even I was surprised at my ability to block out the pain. That MWF title is worth EVERYTHING to me; no sacrifice was too great to win that coveted strap.

Dick Denim: That's the way it should be. I saw more HEART and DETERMINATION from you, Mike Speedo, that I've personally seen in quite some time. You are a very worthy MWF champion. You finally have the respect you were after. Speaking of which, what challenges do you seek as you begin your MWF World title reign? Which wrestlers do YOU respect?

Mike Speedo: Well, obviously, Brother Friend will get a rematch. I endured more punishment in that match than I had in my entire career. I'm sure plenty of people are saying that my victory was just a fluke, but I am seeking the chance to prove them wrong. I have a lot of respect for Brother Friend, but on that day there was no beating Mike Speedo. Next we have Brett Krueger, the winner of the 4-way match. Do you think I'm impressed at all in your ability to beat a rookie, Double-7? If Brother Friend hadn't been so foolish to give me a title match, Double 7 would have been the one to go down to defeat that day. I think that Brett Krueger was a great wrestler in his day, but I don't believe that he has the ability or the desire to succeed in this new era of MWF wrestling.
Now the NWA. They think they can come in here as NEW personas and immediately dominate. I've got NEWS for them. They're STILL the same no-good, dirty rotten stinkin' hyenas they were before. I've beaten all 3 of them before, and I'm looking forward to it again.

Dick Denim: It was revealed on the MWF call-in show LiveWire, that Doctor Destruction in in fact your brother. Will family get in your way of giving Doctor D a title shot?

Mike Speedo: Doctor Destruction IS my brother, but he won't get any special favors from Mike Speedo. He's gonna have to earn a shot at the gold like everybody else. Though all that aside, I feel he's a perfect example of all that's good with the MWF. Unlike Krueger, he's willing to change with the times. In the past few months, my favorite matches in the MWF of all-time have involved Doctor Destruction. He IS the MWF hardcore icon. I'm sure that he'll eventually get a shot at this gold. I think it would be a great match, and I think I would be tested to the limit.

Dick Denim: I know in the past few months, you were willing to take a backseat in the MWF title picture to train some great new recruits at your wrestling school. Masa Sushi, FBI, Prince Rocky Iakea, Garbage Man George Refuse, and now men like the Phantom Shadow. Your work ethic in training these men, along with your tenacity at remaining at the top of your game in the squared circle. speaks VOLUMES for your dedication to the MWF organization. You have my vote for MWF MVP.

Mike Speedo: Well, I hope everybody in the MWF will give me a vote for that. I plan on being a fighting champion, taking on all-comers. I want to be the man that rid the MWF of the NWA once and for all. It's a big task, but I think all the wrestlers in the MWF should put their differences aside until this threat is neutralized. If and when that's accomplished, Mike Speedo will just keep on doing what he does best....provide the best wrestling action and entertainment that he can.

Dick Denim: Well, said, Mike Speedo. Once again, congratulations on your MWF title victory, and best of luck in your future title defenses. Thank you for your time, today.

Mike Speedo: Always a pleasure, Dick. I'll see you on the wildside.
