Career Profile
Mr. Black made his MWF debut at Saturday Slugfest 5, July 17, 1999 billed
as Sergeant Joe Black managed by Drill Sergeant Martin. Mr. Black suffered
a pinfall loss to Double-7 Chris Simmons. Managed to get his shoulder
up following Double-7's traditional finisher the "Double-7 Death-Drop", but
was defeated after Simmons foiled an interference attempt by Martin, obtained
Black's billy club, smashed him with it and covered him for the 3-count.
Titles Held :
MWF Aquidneck Island Regional (A.I.R.) Title 9/12/99 - 10/31/99
(defeated Andre Agony)
MWF United States Title April
27, 2000 - July 22, 2000
(tournament final over The Menace)
MWF United States Title January
13, 2001 - present
(defeated Mountain of Love)
Greatest Match: 4/27/00 vs. The Menace. After Bobo Bravado was stripped
of the MWF U.S. title, there was no happier person in the MWF but Mr. Black.
Black stepped up to the plate and tore thru Beach Blanket Bobby in
the first round of the tournament to crown a new U.S. champion, then went
on to pin the Menace with his TKO manuever to capture the prestigious MWF
U.S. title belt.
Favorite Match: 11/13/99 vs. Fiend. Proved he could successfully
play with the big boys in this 2-out-of-3 falls match against Fiend. After
being bloodied and beaten by Fiend in the first fall, fought back against
all odds showing his intestinal fortitude weathering Fiend's power-manuevers
until he got in a position where he managed to apply his TKO on Fiend from
the top rope. Pinned Fiend to take the second fall and was well on
his way to possibly taking the third and final fall as well but was the victim
of an assault by Fiend's Flock partner Overkill who speared Black while the
referee was stunned which was followed up by a Fiend whiplash onto a steel
chair for the final fall and the match.
Toughest Opponent: Dr. Destruction. As the reigning MWF A.I.R.
champion, was chosen to be MWF President Travalenee's proxy against Dr.
Destruction's proxy Mr. D when Dr. Destruction challenged Fred Travalenee
for his role of MWF President. Mr. D was no MWF newcomer, however,
he was in fact Dr. Destruction under a mask and he would let nothing stop
him from becoming MWF President. With the Hard Corps interfering on
behalf of Dr. Destruction at ringside during the match as an added obstacle,
Black was overwhelmed by Dr. Destruction and doctor-bombed thru a table and
pinned losing the match for Fred Travalenee as well as his own MWF A.I.R.
title.
Most Hated Opponent: Rugged Ralph. Showed no fear in challenging MWF
superstars including reigning MWF World Champion Rugged Ralph in summer '99.
But when Rugged Ralph was shocked that he could not intimidate Mr.
Black during an in-ring interview, he became the first MWF superstar to attack
him as he laid out Black with his "eradicator" finisher. Enraged beyond
belief, Black challenged Rugged Ralph for his MWF title, but was eventually
defeated by the more experienced Ralph, fueling even more his hatred of the
man.
| Favorite Manuever: TKO. Mr. Black uses this as his finishing manuever. Black picks up an opponent in a fireman's carry, holds on to the victim's head, swings him over his shoulder and brings him down into a stunner/diamond cutter. |
Scouting Report
===Strengths===
: Confidence. Came to the MWF for 1 thing - to prove himself.
Thus far, Mr. Black has set his sights on the top and has the hunger
that an individual needs to succeed as he climbs up the ladder of
contention.
: Fearless. Let's no man intimidate him seeking the best competition
that the MWF can provide.
: Growing offensive repertoire. With every match he wrestles, Black
improves and is constantly seeking to incorporate new manuevers into his
arsenal to keep opponents guessing.
: Mountain of Love. Improved greatly under the tutelage of the former
MWF World Champion.
===Weaknesses===
: Raw. Experience can only come with time, and Black should try not
to take too much too soon. Sometimes the best offense is a good defense,
so Black should try and work on his selling of manuevers and match pacing
in lieu of trying to come up with flashy manuever after flashy manuever.
: Indecisive. Sometimes hesitates on what course of action he must
take if a particular strategy backfires. This can lead to an opponent
being able to find the time to regroup and attack.
: Plays to Opponent's Strengths. Should not try to defeat a given
opponent at their own game. Instead of trying to bodyslam or suplex
the giants and strongmen of the MWF who will use those types of manuevers
more often to their advantage, Black should concentrate on his agility and
speed and focus on executing manuevers that take advantage of these assets
in his matches when the situation calls for it.
Career Bio
1999
Mr. Black made his MWF debut at Saturday Slugfest 5, July 17, 1999 managed by Drill Sergeant Martin. Black suffered a pinfall loss to Double-7 Chris Simmons. Shocked MWF fans everywhere when he nanaged to get his shoulder up following Double-7's traditional finisher the "Double-7 Death-Drop", but was defeated after Simmons foiled an interference attempt by Drill Sergeant Martin, obtained Black's billy club, smashed him with it and covered him for the 3-count. After the match, Double-7 delivered a beating to both men.
Teaming with Count Rico Malachi, unveiled his finishing manuever - the TKO - at MWF Independence Day in a tag team match against Chester Travalenee and Purple Vengeance. Caught Purple Vengeance in the manuever which brought victory to Black and his tag-team on his first successful MWF ppv appearance.
Faced the Portuguese sensation, former MWF World Champion Mountain of Love at the MWF's Los Punlados event in Lisbon, Portugal. Fought well against the former MWF champ, but the backing of the Portuguese crowd was too much for Black, as they were solidly in the corner of their own hero, Mountain of Love who defeated Black with his death valley driver.
Wrestled MWF mainstay Brett Krueger at MWF Summer Showdown 1999. Despite the ever-growing legions of Black-amaniacs in attendance at that event, eventually fell victim to Brett Krueger's devastating figure-four leglock especially when Krueger used the ropes for leverage to successfully pin Black. Also at Summer Showdown 1999, a debate was held between MWF President Fred Travalenee who brought out Mr. Black as his bodyguard and would-be president Dr. Destruction (who had been out of action with an alleged career-ending injury). Just as it seemed Dr. Destruction had the full backing of the MWF fans in attendance as the debate reached its conclusion, Sgt Black attacked Dr. Destruction from behind with his billy club and along with Travalenee stomped down Dr. Destruction until he was saved from further punishment by Sycho Analyst Sid & Gynecologist Gabe. Frustrated by Sid & Gabe's save, Travalenee issued a challenge for a match : Travalenee would select a man to be his proxy - Black - in a match against a man selected by Dr. Destruction who would be his proxy. If Dr. Destruction's proxy won, Dr. Destruction would become the new MWF President; if Travalenee's proxy won, Dr. Destruction would be forced to leave the MWF forever - a challenge accepted by Dr. Destruction. The match was signed for MWF Wrestlemania 1999 - just 2 months down the road!
In the meantime, buoyed by the confidence of being selected by Fred Travalenee to represent him, at MWF IYF 8 : Countdown to Extinction, Mr. Black made an in-ring appearance and challenged anyone in the MWF to a match as he claimed that he had not faced any competition thus far in the MWF. The MWF World Champion Rugged Ralph appeared and taunted the young superstar and said he did not deserve a match with a man the caliber of the MWF World Champ. Black agreed that he was a new-comer in the MWF but that when he had paid his dues, someday he would kick the a$$ of Rugged Ralph. As Black was leaving the ring, Rugged Ralph attacked him and hit his finishing move, the eradicator bull-dog and left Black laying. In the main event, MWF World Champion Rugged Ralph was often scrambling as the determined Black sought revenge for the attack earlier on and assaulted Ralph with no let-up. At one point, Ralph left the ring and started to make his way back to the dressing room, but was intercepted by the Mountain of Love, who grabbed Ralph and threw him back into the ring. Although Black managed to hit Rugged Ralph with his finisher, he hesitated to cover Ralph instead took a moment to soak in the cheers of the crowd giving Ralph the opportunity to mount a comeback and successfully defended the MWF World title by pinning Mr. Black with his "eradicator" bulldog executed off the second rope.
Mr. Black did double duty at MWF Superclash 99 : You Want Blood, You Got It. Mr. Black was signed to face Andre Agony in a defense of Agony's MWF A.I.R. title. Black defeated Agony with the TKO to take his first MWF title!! Now MWF A.I.R. champion, he also participated in the main event : Fiend, Mountain of Love, and Mr. Black vs. Double-7 Chris Simmons, Carnage and MWF World champ Rugged Ralph. This was a 6-man team elimination match, once a member of 1 team was busted open and bloodied, then that man was eliminated from the match until 1 side remained. Black managed to outlast his bitter enemy Rugged Ralph who was eliminated by a metal key-shot by Black's teammate Mountain of Love, but the Sarge fell victim to Carnage who actually bit into his forehead bloodying him and eliminating him from the match. Black's teammate Fiend, however survived until the end and took the victory for their team.
At MWF In Your Face 9 : Eye of the Hurricane, Black made the first successful title defense of his newly-won MWF Auidneck Island Regional title. Mr. Black defeated the MWF scary burnt guy, DeathMask, finishing him off once again with the TKO.
Mr. Black was involved in the main event once again at MWF Saturday Slugfest 6. Mr. Black went all-out but ultimately lost to Carnage and his high-flying high-risk offense via his Carnage superfly splash.
At MWF Wrestlemania 1999, the match for the Presidency of the MWF was contested. MWF President Fred Travalenee's proxy Mr. Black faced Dr. Destruction's proxy. As soon as MWF President Fred Travalenee and his proxy Black made their way down to ringside, Travalenee took the microphone and could not wait to see who Dr. Destruction had picked for his proxy. Dr. Destruction then came down to ringside with his proxy Mr. D - a man wearing a mask and wearing an identical Dr. Destruction t-shirt as Destruction himself, and these 2 men were flanked by Mountain of Love and Fiend. Dr. Destruction then took the microphone and boasted that he was so sure that Mr. D would defeat Mr. Black, that Destruction himself did not even need to be present at ringside. But before Destruction left the ringside area, he told Mr. D that he had one final piece of advice to give him and they both disappeared back thru the MWF aisleway curtain. Seconds later, Mr. D came back thru the curtain without Dr. Destruction. Finally, after a match that saw both Mr. D's entourage Fiend and Moutain of Love and Black's entourage, Travalenee and Drill Sergeant Martin interfere to give their respective sides the advantage, Dr. Destruction's proxy Mr. D pinned Fred Travalenee's proxy Mr. Black when Mr. D executed a "doctor-bomb" michinoku driver on Black from the ring apron thru a ringside table. Mr. D rolled Black into the ring and pinned him with 1 foot on his chest. After the 3-count, Mr. D unmasked revealing he was in fact Dr. Destruction, and became the new MWF President on the spot. Distraught that Dr. D had beaten him for the MWF Presidency, Fred Travalenee fired Black from the MWF even though he was lying on his back devastated from going thru the table. But since Fred was no longer MWF President, and impressed with the way Black had done his best in their match, new MWF President Dr. Destruction disallowed Trvalenee's firing of Black.
On the final event of 1999, MWF Survivor Series, Fiend defended the MWF U.S. title on behalf of Bravado (who was challenging Hard Corps stablemate Mountain of Love for the MWF World title in the main event) against Mr. Black in a 2-out-of-3-falls match. Fiend handily took the first fall bloodying Black along the way. But Black fought back and rallied taking the second fall with his TKO over Fiend! Fiend utilized interference from his Flock partner Overkill in the final third fall, however, and took the third fall for the victory executing his whiplash manuever on Black for the win to close out 1999.
2000
Mr. Black started off 2000 in impressive fashion winning the WAR GAMES main event. At the first card of 2000 - MWF Saturday Slugfest 7 - participated in the WAR GAMES main event of the card. The match was a 6-man tag team match where partners were drawn at random to compete against opponents drawn at random. By the luck of the draw, Joe Black was matched with Dr. Destruction and MWF World Champion Mountain of Love against Double-7 Chris Simmons, Fiend, and Carnage. The real story of the match, however, turned out to be the special referee, Rugged Ralph. Rugged Ralph called the match fairly until Carnage got in his face several times during the match. The end of the match came when Carnage became so enfuriated by Rugged Ralph's slow counts of his pinfall attempts, this allowed Black to hit his finisher the TKO on Carnage and pin him to win the match for his team.
In a special attraction match at MWF IN Your Face 10 - End of Days - 4/1/2000 - Black called out former MWF President Fred Travalenee and demanded 5 minutes in the ring with him for costing him his MWF A.I.R. title at MWF Wrestlemania 1999 - the very match where Fred Travalenee also ended his MWF Presidential tenure. Black pinned Fred Travalenee with a side slam and humiliated the man. Also at MWF IN Your Face 10 - End of Days, MWF President Dr. Destruction announced that reigning MWF World TV Champion SID had been institutionalized and that he was therefore stripped of the MWF World Television title, and that a 3-way dance would be held to determine a new champion. The match would take place later on the card and would involve Destruction's Hard Corps partner Fiend, Double-7 Chris Simmons, & Mr. Black. Dr. Destruction turned out to be anything but impartial as he pulled the referee out of the ring as Double-7 had executed his flying headbutt finisher on Black. As Double-7 turned his attention to Destruction, Fiend took the opportunity to execute his "backlash" finisher on Simmons and pinned him to become the new MWF TV Champion.
Denied a chance to win the coveted MWF TV title, Mr. Black received the opportunity of a lifetime to compete in a mini-tourney for the MWF U.S. title vacated by Bobo Bravado. Sergeant Joe Black pinned Beach Blanket Bobby with a sitout face-buster (x-factor) in the first round; then in the MWF U.S. title tournament final, Black pinned the Menace with Police Brutality - his swinging fireman's carry into a diamond-cutter/stunner to become the next MWF United States Champion.
Now the MWF U.S. Champion, at MWF Spring Fling 2000, Mr. Black again faced MWF TV Champion Fiend but this time with Mr. Black's MWF U.S. title on the line. After being super-bombed thru a table by Fiend, Black became the recipient of good luck as Fiend's enemy Carnage's interfered and took this time to blast Fiend with Fiend's MWF TV title belt. Black covered Fiend and pinned his shoulders to the mat to successfully defend the MWF U.S. title.
At MWF In Your Face 11 - Mission Impossible - May 20th, 2000, Mr. Black successfully defended the MWF U.S. title against 2 opponents simultaneously in a handicap match - Gynecologist Gabe & Full-Blooded Portagee Manuel. But Black ALSO was instrumental in helping the Mountain of Love successfully defend the MWF World title later on in the MOL's world title defense against Fiend. During the match as the referee was inadvertantly distracted by Fiend's valet the Black Widow, Carnage came down to the ring and smashed Fiend with a steel chair. As this was happening, Black smashed Mountain of Love with a steel chair and Mountain fell on top of Fiend as the referee turned around and counted the 1-2-3. Following the pinfall, Mr. Black stole the Mountain's MWF World title belt.
With the MWF title belt in his possession, Mr. Black struck again! On his way into MWF arena for MWF Superclash 2000 - June 3rd, 2000, MWF World Champion Mountain of Love was attacked by MWF U.S. Champion Sergeant Joe Black who smashed Mountain of Love from behind with a steel chair. Black then hit a pile-driver on Mountain onto the steel chair severely injuring him. The Mountain of Love was rushed to Newport Hospital as Black gloated. However, he scheduled Mr. Black -Carnage MWF U.S. title match was interrupted by the surprise return to MWF arena of the MWF World Champion Mountain of Love. Mountain of Love demanded to be part of the match so he could get his hands on Black to get revenge for the attack earlier on in the card. Despite this set-back, in a 3-way dance for the MWF U.S. title, Black was able to successfully defend the MWF U.S. title when he pinned MWF World Champion Mountain of Love with 1 foot on his chest after Mountain of Love had been injured back suplexing Carnage from the top rope thru a table. Following the match, Black mocked the Mountain and took both his MWF U.S. title and the Mountain's MWF World title and eagerly awaits facing the MOL when he finally gets the MWF World title shot.
Before the start of MWF Independence Day 2000 - June 19, 2000, Mr. Black (still in possession of Mountain's MWF title belt that he stole from him) cut a promo claiming MWF World Champion Mountain of Love was a paper champion and compared him to a weak WWF champion as he produced a store-bought WWF belt from a bag. Black said that he would pick a dream partner and face Mountain of Love and a dream partner of his choice in the tag team main event of MWF Independence Day 2000. But Black's plan backfired on him as, MWF World Champion Mountain of Love & Fiend defeated MWF U.S. Champion Sergeant Joe Black & Rugged Ralph when Mountain of Love pinned Joe Black with the death valley driver. Mountain of Love then took back his MWF world title belt.
But Black was not done with the Mountain of Love - before the start of MWF Middletown Massacre 2000, MWF World Champion Mountain of Love arrived at MWF arena but he was met in the MWF backstage area by the man who was scheduled to receive a MWF World title shot against him -ARES - Ares spin-kicked a steel chair into the Mountain's head. Black, whose challenge the Mountain of Love had repulsed at the last MWF event ALSO appeared and aligned with Ares. Together, they spike-piledrove the Mountain of Love onto a steel chair and Ares also DDT'ed Mountain onto the chair leaving him laying. The new duo then made off with the Mountain of Love's luggage. Having eliminated the MOL, MWF United States Champion Sergeant Joe Black successfully defended the MWF U.S. title by battling Overkill to a 15 minute time limit draw. Overkill had Joe Black locked in a kata hajime submission hold, but the time limit ran out before Black's hand could drop for the final third time.
At MWF Summer Showdown 2000 - July 22, 2000, Ares and MWF U.S. Champion Sergeant Joe Black appeared and cut a promo. Both men bragged about injuring the MWF World Champion at the last MWF event. However, MWF owner Joseph T. Joseph ordered that Black must defend the MWF U.S. title against none other than his ally ARES. In a MWF U.S. title match, Ares pinned MWF U.S. Champion Sergeant Joe Black with Black's own finisher - Police Brutality (swinging fireman's carry into a stunner) to become the N-E-W MWF United States Champion. Although Black & Ares were successful at putting out the Mountain of Love, Black & Ares alliance was shattered when Ares defeated Black for Black's precious MWF U.S. title. Also, Mountain of Love surrendered the MWF world title and CARNAGE became the new MWF Champion when he defeated Bobo Bravado in a #1 contender's match at this same event.
Before the start of MWF Battle Bowl 2000 - August 5, 2000, Ares attacked Mr. Black and officially ended their allaince - Ares may have injured him permanently but Black was saved by none other than the man whom he had despised - the Mountain of Love himself as he appeared and drove off Ares. Mountain of Love now took Sergeant Joe Black under his wing and transformed him in MR. BLACK. MWF BattleBowl became the event to decide a new MWF Hardcore Champion as that belt was vacated when MWF Hardcore Champion Carnage won the MWF World title at Showdown. Mr. Black (w/ former MWF World Champion Mountain of Love) & Disco Nights defeated Grand Theft Auto & White Snake when Sergeant Joe Black pinned GTA following the Black Attack - a reverse sit-down stunner - his brand new finishing move. Before the BattleBowl battle royal, however, Mountain of Love ordered Black not to participate as Black had sustained an injury at the hands of Ares, and the Mountain explained there would be another day for Mr. Black's title aspirations.
Mr. Black agreed to follow the MOL's instructions to the letter, as he believed he was doing things the wrong way in the MWF. Thus at MWF In Your Face 12 : Armed & Dangerous - August 19, 2000, Mr. Black (formerly Sgt. Joe Black, w/ new MWF U.S. Champion Mountain of Love & Trinity) pinned Blanta with the Black Attack - inverted stunner. Following the match, Mountain of Love reprimanded his charge Black for not performing 100% up to standards, and attacked him with a series of death valley drivers before carrying him back to the dressing room. Also, in a MWF U.S. Title Match, Mountain of Love (returning from being sidelined by Ares) gained ultimate revenge on Ares as he pinned MWF U.S. Champion Ares (w/ Ted Alphonso) following a death valley driver to become the new MWF United States Champion avenging himself and Mr. Black.
At MWF Wrestle-Mania 2000 - September 9, 2000, it was now time for Mr. Black to go for a MWF title - none other than the MWF U.S. title now in possession of Black's mentor Mountain of Love. In a Teacher-vs-Student match, MWF United States Champion Mountain of Love successfully defended the MWF U.S. title by pinning Mr. Black following a death valley driver. But following the match, Mountain of Love raised the hand of Mr. Black after wrestling perhaps the greatest match of Black's career to date. The two allies then left the ring together.
In the MAIN EVENT of MWF Lunatic Fringe- October 21, 2000, the duo continued their winning ways as MWF United States Champion Mountain of Love & Mr. Black defeated MWF World Champion Carnage & Bobo Bravado when Mr. Black pinned Carnage following a Mountain of Love mangler piledriver off the top rope.
At MWF Harborview Havoc - November 4, 2000, Mr. Black also finally gained a measure of revenge against a man that he despised - Rugged Ralph. Rugged Ralph appeared during the event and cut a promo responding to Brett Krueger - a man that he had been feuding with. During the promo, Rugged Ralph called out a young man jeering him in the audience. He asked the man who he came to see wrestle and the young man said that he came to see his brother wrestle....and that his brother was in fact Mr. Black. Rugged Ralph attacked the fan and executed his eradicator short bulldog on him prompting the manager of Mr. Black - Trinity to come down to assist him. Rugged Ralph then threatened Trinity and Mr. Black came down to protect her. Mr. Black (w/ Trinity, MWF U.S. Champion Mountain of Love, and Black's brother) pinned Rugged Ralph with the black attack inverted stunner following a death valley driver from Black's mentor Mountain of Love. Black celebrated victorious with the MOL closing out 2000.
2001
Finally, at MWF New Year's Evil - Mountain of Love decided it was time for Mr. Black's final test - the final exam for Mr. Black. In a Teacher vs. Student match, in front of his hometown fans, Roger's High School's own Mr. Black pinned MWF United States Champion Mountain of Love after the blackout biel-bomb off the second rope thru a table to capture the MWF U.S. title, defeating his mentor Mountain of Love.
